Hey Gang,
Had a suprise a few nites ago when I was driving home, rearend kinda exploded. Anyway, I have to go to the junk yard and get another now. They are between $100 and $150 and I would love to get the right one. I heard that I have to put one with the exact gear ratio as the old one was, is that true? If so, how would I be sure that I am jerking the right rearend outta the wrecking yard? I got the tag off my broke rearend:
3 54 D8TA TB
603901 - 1
That is what the tag looked like. Can anyone tell me what gear ratio I have? Please help. It is in a 79 F-250 4x4, camper special I think,,, B.B.
Thanx, Terry
Yes you should put a rear end with the same ratio as the old one. The reason for this is because of the front diff. having that same ratio, and because the trucks driveline was set up with the correct gears in the rear. In a two wheel drive truck it wouldn't be quite as necessary to get the exact same gears.
I would think the 3 54 on the tag would mean 3.54 gears??...but I am not an expert at this.
I'm pretty sure any ford axle with 8 lug 77-96 will fit so you have alot of options. Just find one with 3.54 gears and 8 lug and you'll be good as gloden.
Yes, it is 8 lug. I talked to a guy today who said he had one, with the gear ratio I need (3.54) and it was out of the truck, guarenteed for 30 days. He wanted $595 plus $100 core. He told me that the only interchange with that would be out of a 77-79,,,, any truth to that?
30 day warranty is not really long enough to mean much. I think if you look around you can find one for less money - unless this axle is newly rebuilt or has a locker or limited slip unit or something in it?
hahahahaha 600 bucks for a 30 spline dana 60??? what is that guy smokin......most people practically give those things away
since you trashed the 30 spline 60...why not go bigger.....
find a full float sterling 10.25 out of an 85-97 f-250hd or f-350 srw
they will be 3.55 instead of 3.54 but dont worry......some fords had 350 rear and 354 fronts...
everything will bolt up .....except you will prolly have to shorten your d-shaft a couple inches....make sure you get the ubolts too..and make sure they r long nough
i could go on but ill shutup now
oh yea, dont pay more than 200 bucks for your rear
This was no locker,,, nothing special,, and that was the second quote I had in that range,, the other was 650. I was hopin not to have to do anything to it except bolt it in,, what years would fit that? I really need to get the truck goin again,, anyone? Oh, and I'm a little north of Seattle and willing to drive a little to save a little,, if anyone knows anything in the area.
you should be able to get one out of a 2wd also, 3.54's are pretty common. Most junkyards my way want about 300 for a good one. a few of them want 500 though. Would be a good idea to pull the diff. cover and inspect the gears first, look for any water in the oil and any metal shavings. I bought a used rear once for 300 and it made all kinds of noises after about a month. might be better to just get your rebuilt, then you know it is good, could even add a locker.
