my father purchased a 1979 highboy f250 with a manual about a year ago its got a 460 and all the patina shes a bad unit. But after driving it for a while my fuel gauge has stopped working. It is the duel tank system it still has both, but before i dive in to fix this i just wanted to put this out there so im not changing gauges and chasing wire just for it to be the sender and vice versa. I do have reason to believe its the senders both tanks worked then the rear went out but the front still showed up on the gauge. Id switch to the rear tank and it’d go all the way to empty when the tank is really full, and then when id switch to the front tank the gauge would go back up. But now both of them don't work. Because the gauge seemed to be moving would it be reasonable to say i should just replace both senders? Or is the gauge a more probable place to start?
Ground the wire that attaches to a stud on each sender. Turn the key on, watch the gauge. It should go full scale in 15 seconds or so. If the gauge does go full scale, it is most likely a bad sender.

I second this! Had the same problems and that's the quickest/best way to diagnose it, worked for me.
