Much like the Ford 6.0, they took power away as production went on. I had a 2004 2500HD truck as a work vehicle back in 2011 and almost bought it because it had so much power for a gas engine. If it had 4wd, it'd be part of my fleet all now.

Definitely don't settle for 3.73 gears if you plan on towing, it'll do the job but it'll do it even better with 4.10 gears.
It was only the 8.1L gas V8 that had power ratings reduced.

By contrast, the 6.0L gas V8 was actually more powerful in 2005 and 2006 than in 2003 and 2004.

L18 8.1L Power Reduced Over Time
2003 L18 8.1L: 339 HP 455 TQ
2004 L18 8.1L: 320 HP 445 TQ
2005 L18 8.1L: 320 HP 440 TQ
2006 L18 8.1L: 320 HP 440 TQ

LQ4 6.0L Power Increased Over Time
2003 LQ4 6.0L Gas: 320 HP 360 TQ
2004 LQ4 6.0L Gas: 320 HP 360 TQ
2005 LQ4 6.0L Gas: 325 HP 365 TQ
2006 LQ4 6.0L Gas: 335 HP 375 TQ

I don't recommend EcoBoost anything! There is a reason they are called Eco Booms!

If you want to see the problems https://www.youtube.com/@FordTechMakuloco is an awesome channel.

That's what I call them "Eco booms". Between them and the 5.4 3 valve, they've kept him busy and probably helped him pay cash for his shop.

My Daughter's boyfriend bought a 2017 EcoBoom Mustang and sure enough, it went boom. He had purchased a Ford ESP and the dealer replaced the engine with one right off the factory line.
