Mine is a stock 302, with the AOD recently rebuilt (i just found that out last night, i thought it was the E4OD) and all stock gears, with 31" tires. I live in the hills as well. 183000 miles on it, and it runs like a dream. It bogs down going up hills until it kicks down into drive, then it has no problems at all. Flat ground it screams and is pretty quick for a 2.5 ton ride. When u are going up and down hills, try putting it into drive (if auto) and 4th (if manual or maybe even 3rd on some hills) and then see how it does. If that doesnt help some, then id do what the other gentlemen in here as suggested.
You are correct about the gears. If I am going up and down inclines; especially with a strong wind and/or pulling a trailer, I turn the O/D off and then don't have so much of a problem.
Although I still think that these trucks are underpowered in stock form, the O/D trans is not helping.
I put my extra money into my Harley, and just keep the Bronc in good running order. I am not going to spend a bunch of money on a 3" exhaust etc. If I have to get a new motor any time soon, which I hope that I do not, then I will spring for some extra HP and will probably have to open up the exhaust.
But I hope (knocking on wood again) that I can go another couple of years, currently 115K and running smoothly. I only put about 10-12 K a year on it, it would be less but I usually have at least one long road trip in there.
thats for sure. your stock gearing is 3.55 and with that size tire should be either 3.73 or 4.10's to put you back to stock range. I would do the things mentioned earler in this thread to rule them out before going to a new motor, you have at least a year or more out of that motor. get a chiltons or haynes manual and learn your rig , it will save you so much $$$$$
yea that will explain it with the big tires but it idles funny to i'm sitting there and the rpm go up past 1000 then go back down way below 1000 and it almost stalls you can easily hear it when it gos that low that its gonna stall but it dont it gos right back up past 1000 again whats wrone with it is it the throttle body
yea it sucks gas alot i put anywhere from 80-100 $ in it a week and i dont do long traveling im not real good with engines so i wont be able to do the work for the tune up

WHAT?!?!
A week?
Are you serious?!
OMG, if that is true (and its not a month) You must be rich for 1, and two, do a few things for me
1. Change the FPS, and the Fuel filter.
2. Just get a manual, unless you a old man who is in a wheel chair, the manual along with a brain will get you a brand new bronco (with about 10k and lotz of hours of work, but you get my point. It'll become you best friend)
JBronco is right; Bronco's came from the factory under powered. I am sick of people talking about torque like it is the only thing that matters...SO IS HORSEPOWER. Let's face it people Bronco's are slow, a rebuild with performance parts can make them faster.

i do have performance parts for it i just didnt stick them on yet because i would like to give it a fresh rebuild and maybe a bore i i can afford it i dont want it just to be a normal bronco i want it to have lots of hp and torque
chris if you want somthing faster then by a mustang, this is a 4x4 not a baja 1000 truck. When you gain torque with a motor you also gain hp they go hand in hand .
Crazed if you want this done right, look into a 351w swap. have the 351 block stroked to a 393 and you will more then happy. or swap in a 460 there is no replacement for displacement. the 302 even with a good rebuild or a stroker kit just doesnt amount to a whole lot. that motor is more suited for the mustangs and such being there about 1000 + lbs lighter .
if you can afford it great but that doenst mean diddly. learn your truck because if you out 4x4in in the middle of nowhere what you gonna do then if it quits running. might be a simple fix but to someone that doesnt no jack it could be a bad scenerio
