First time attempt to FIRE UP!

Had some friends over today to try and turn over the engine. We got it started but the fan seized up. I was happy it fired up before the fan stopped.

It seems you may have come across one of the Flathead "secrets". Most discover that the Ford Flathead Fan Hubs require motor oil the hard way when they start making noise or seize up!

There is a good write up here on what to look for and what to do: Ford Oil Filled Fan Assy

I added oil during the summer to the fan. Maybe I didn't add another.

I oiled the fan like the directions given in the link. The fan turns freely both by hand and when I turn the engine over my hand. I got a little oil on the belts. I wiped it off it doesnt seem to effect the belts moving. I am going to give it a try again today.

It seems oil is leaking from fan hub. I am going to replace the gaskets. Probably a good idea regardless.

I disassembled the Fan hub (Honestly I was pretty proud of myself). It was a mess inside. Looked every bit of something that is 75 years old. One gasket was completely gone and the other fell apart pretty easily. A friend suggested soaking in gas or diesel to clean up the parts. Thoughts on soaking in gas or diesel? I have new gaskets coming this week.

There really isn't anything in there that can be harmed, so whatever non-abrasive cleaner works for you would probably be just fine.

Here are two threads on dealing with these hubs:

I took apart the fan hub. Replaced the gaskets, really cleaned up the all the parts, added oil. Fired it up. The fan turns while it is cranking but stops once the engine turns over.

What else could cause the fan to lock up when the engine is running?

Okay, if the fan hub assembly has been properly lubricated (both earlier and now) and it still gets stuck, there are a few thoughts that come to mind:

1) Proper Fan Belt, Adjustment, and Alignment
2) Damaged components:

Is the 21A-8632 fan bracket complete, whole, and void of cracks?
Is the 21A-8626 fan spindle bearing fitted to the shaft without any side to side or cocking motion?
Is the 8RT-6520 intake manifold / valve chamber cover cracked or missing pieces where the assembly registers?

I do not see any of these concerns on the truck.

While cranking the engine all the pulleys turned but stopped when engine turned over.

1. Lack of oil in fan Hub? Took apart replaced gaskets, cleaned the entire unit, added oil.
2. Belts too tight? Removed the belts.

Once the engine turned over the pulleys stop again but the engine still runs.

Any thoughts of the problem? I have a video but the too large to upload.

A mechanic friend suggested I may have sheared the "Key Way" on the crank shaft?
