02 Explorer Help
1.) When I first shift the car (in the morning or after the car sits for short period of time.) from Park to Drive there is a screeching/whining noise coming from underneath the front end of the car.
2.) When I put the car back into Park the car rolls a concerning amount of space (atleast a half of foot) until the shift **** makes a loud bang, then is when the car comes to a stop.
3.) When I first step on the gas from a stop there is a series of 4 or 5 clicks coming from underneath the front of the car.
Does anybody know what could be causing this??? Thanks in advance

also do those sound like "normal" problems for a 2002 ford Explorer XLS??? Thats what ford has been telling me

SPECIAL SERVICE MESSAGES
16824 2002-2003 4DR EXPLORER CONTROL TRAC 4X4 W/2-SPD TORQUE ON DEMAND (TOD), AND 2003 AVIATOR ADVANCE TRAC 4X4 W/1-SPD TOD - T-CASE FLANGE NOISE
SOME 2002-2003 4DR EXPLORER CONTROL TRAC 4X4 W/2-SPD TORQUE ON DEMAND(TOD), AND 2003 AVIATOR ADVANCE TRAC 4X4 W/1-SPD TOD MAY EXHIBIT AN AUDIBLE POP/CLICK/CREAK (NOT A CLUNK) FROM THE REAR DRIVELINE. THIS MAY OCCUR WHEN TORQUE IS INITIALLY APPLIED, SUCH AS WHEN SHIFTING WHILE STATIONARY FROM PARK OR NEUTRAL TO REVERSE--OR AFTER SHIFTING FROM REVERSE TO DRIVE AND THEN ACCELERATING. TO REPAIR, INSTALL TIGHTER FIT 1L2Z-7B214-AA TCASE OUTPUT FLANGE. CONTINUE NORMAL DIAGNOSIS/REPAIRS FOR UNRELATED WORN DRIVELINE COMPONENTS, SUCH AS DRIVESHAFT OR REAR AXLE. NOTE: CHECK FOR WHEEL LUG STUDS & HUB MOVING AGAINST ROTOR LUG STUD SLOTS, WHICH CAN PRODUCE A SIMILAR AUDIBLE CLICK NOISE. IF SO, VERIFY PROPER WHEEL CENTERING AND TORQUE VALUES. DOES NOT APPLY TO AWD-TYPE 4X4 SYSTEMS ON MOUNTAINEER AND SOME AVIATOR.

THIS MAY BE CAUSED BY A WATER PUMP PULLEY THAT IS OUT OF SPECIFICATION. ON 2001 MODEL YEAR VEHICLES, THIS MAY ALSO BE CAUSED BY THE FEAD BELT. IF NORMAL DIAGNOSTICS CANNOT PINPOINT THE CONDITION, REPLACE THE WATER PUMP PULLEY, WITH PART NUMBER 2L2Z-8509-AA. Noise can indicate that transmission parts are hitting together abnormally, which should not happen in a normally-functioning transmission, and when clean transmission fluid is lubricating the moving parts. A transmission should make little noise when operating properly.
Your vehicle likely has a transmission (or clutch) problem if:
There is buzzing or any other noise from the transmission
There is a clicking noise in transmission while in 4-wheel drive
There is a clunking from under the vehicle when you change gears
The problem may be one of several possibilities:
The transmission fluid is low, dirty, or incorrect
There is an internal problem in the transmission or transfer case
There are external controls or parts that need adjustment or replacement
Electrical components need adjustment or replacement
In an automatic transmission, the transmission computer may need replacement
Internal parts may be worn or damaged which may require a major repair
My car is a 4x4 and its in 4x4 auto at all times. I do have the clicking noise when I start up and i do have noises when I shift along with clunks. I just wish Ford will help me out and not bs me around. I will show them everything. Do you think I could have a transmission problem??? Plus that last paragraph is exactly one of my problems, after the car sits over night or for a little time there is a screeching noise when I shift and i do believe my car was made before 3/14/2002. Its too bad you can't work here, lol you would have my car fixed. Thanks for all your help so far.

Ford Trucks for Ford Truck Enthusiasts
When I first step on the gas from a stop there is a series of 4 or 5 clicks coming from underneath the front of the car.
Sounds like an autohub/lockout going bad. But once again, noise can come from anywhere. You need to have your service advisor put their best noise tech in the truck with you for an indepth roadtest. Leave the truck at the dealer the night befor in an out of the way place and take the keys with you. Then the next morning go in and drive with the tech.
Thanks for your help.
My sway bar bushings would squeek, and it took them 4 visits before they 'lubed' them, and then they appeared to be fine.
In the end, I ended up trading my 02 for an 04 that hasn't had any problems, but it only has 2400 miles on it.
