I have a 2011 Ford F-250 Super Duty. The key broke off my keyring while in my pocket sometime throughout the day yesterday. I don't know how it happened now. I've been carrying those keys in my pocket for years. Anyway, I called the dealership and the cost of a key plus programming is $280. A bit expensive for me right after Christmas. What I have in mind is to drill a hole in it so it will go back on a keyring. I know these keys are computer chipped. How big is the chip? Is there room to drill a hole on this key. It has a really big thumb pad. I am thinking that there is enough room to drill a hole, but at what location on the key?
If you have both sets of keys, you don't have to have the dealership program them. You can program them yourself as long as you have both keys just by cycling the ignition switch.

I do have both keys. Another person carries the other one. So if I order another key from Ford parts department or another source, like Ebay or Amazon, I don't have to take it to the service department to program it?
The chip is in the bottom right corner with the Ford logo facing up, it’s fairly small, 1/4” x 1/2”, you can safely drill a hole in it in the top middle.
I’m thinking you could just buy a key case off eBay and swap the internals from the old case to the new one, though I have to admit I haven’t done this myself, and would have to open my own key to see if it can be done.
