Lift Install Tip

Just a little tip for installing springs on a Superduty, or any leaf spring vehicle.

I finished putting an 8 inch lift on my 04 a couple of weeks ago and the only problem I had was the spring locator head on the bolt that holds the leaf pack together was too long and did not let the spring touch the perch on the passenger side(the driver side has a deeper hole).

Anyway, I didn't realize it was too long until I bolted everything together. I was hoping when I lowered the truck the weight of it would let the spring settle into the hole. Nope. As it was already dark out I had to leave it and drive around for a week with the truck sitting completely on the bolt head, spring not touching perch at all. Probably not too safe, but I only live a mile from work.

Well my next day off it took about four hours to grind about .200 of the head to make it fit. I didn't want to take the spring off completely just to grind the head so I c-clamped the leaves together and pulled the bolt out. Of course the holes did not line up when trying to put the bolt back in. That took a couple of hours to do.

I experience the same problem on the same side when i installed mine. When installed, the spring center pin (bolt) was in contact with the axle tube housing and not completely resting on the perch. I removed just enough of the bolt head to allow complete contact between the spring & axle housing. When installing liftkits or anything that could compromize your life or others pay very close attention to detail. Good job on catching this.
