The connectors can be a bear to get out. Recommend you watch some Youtube videos. You'll be doing the passenger side for #3, I'd recommend pulling the fender liner, its really easy on that side (driver side is not). Also get the special tool for the harness, it's not expensive and makes it much easier (still not easy).

I made my own tool for pulling glow plugs from a 12mm assembly wrench I had lying around by putting a bend in it and grinding the sides. Then I just grab it with a needle nose vise grip and pull. But here is a video of a pretty slick and easier tool -- simply a short piece of wire bent into a U that can be wrapped around the base of the harness plug, twisted closed, then pulled with a needle-nose pliers. Wire looks to be about the guage of a coathanger. I think another advantage to these DIY tools is they are more compact and might fit easier than the standard tool for some of the tighter glow plug locations.

OP - interesting tool. I'd also check your GPCM connectors --- many are failing with age and replacing with new pigtails can address problems (e.g. typically over-fueling - white smoke, hard cold starts). Get a good stripper (e.g Klein) since workspace is confined.

Age is certainly an issue with plastic, but engine heat is even more of one. Another benefit to keeping temperatures on the low end - plastic lasts longer (unless it is very cheap plastic that quickly gets brittle no matter what)!

I just did passenger side glow plugs, 2 failed. All but 1 end had missing fingers on glow plug end of the harness. I only found 3 fingers, 3 are mia. I'm not losing any sleep over the missing pieces due to the size of them and the fact they may have broke off during a repair before I bought the truck in 2012.

I would recommend for anyone doing injectors, if you don't know the history of the glow plugs, change them when you have it apart for the injectors.

Thanks all for the feedback. We made it home fine no issues. Interesting enough, I cleared the code while still in Cody, and the code popped again, which was not surprising. But, what was surprising was that it hasn't thrown the code since I've been back in SoCal. Is that surprising to anyone? Again, still learning. So thankful for all the input. I plan to do the 4 GPs on the passenger side since that's where #3 is, but is the GP issue intermittent normally or fail for good?

It could be a bad connection between the harness and GP or at the harness.
