Hey all. Deep dived into a 460 project. The block I got is getting a complete rebuild so it's at the machine shop right now getting all the fun work done before I can assemble it.
The engine came out of a 78 Lincoln and has the d3ve heads. They unfortunately don't do any porting on the heads so I was planning on keeping the stock heads on there after they come back to me.
However, I want to look into a different cam since everything else was more work than I anticipated. I want to try to keep my compression ratio under 9.5:1 so I don't have to run premium which I bet with the d3ve heads it won't be near that anyways.
I'm waiting for them to come back to me of what they bore the block to, and then I'm tossing some cast flat top pistons onto it. I'm planning on tossing a 750 cfm Edelbrock(already have one on hand) onto it, and an Edelbrock performance manifold.
What would be a good cam recommendation since those heads can be a little crappy on the exhaust side.
Cam choice is so dependent on gearing, tranny, use, weight, etc, that its tough to really recommend. Id get in touch with one of the cam companies, and talk to them. They will ask about your whole combo, and give you a better idea of what will work best. That being said, why the cast pistons? You combo might not warrant the strength and cost of forged, but something like a hypereutectic piston isnt a ton more, and a little more forgiving to mods down the road.
You will find when to talk to the cam manufacturer or the rep at summit racing or jegs, they will recommend a very mild camshaft, not much more than stock. No lumpty lump camshafts. Like the other poster said, you have a heavy truck with stock gearing most likely. Stock torque convertor, and I bet you are going to put oversize tires on it. This all requires low end torque, which a mild camshaft will give you.

When the 5.0 blew on my 95 Bronco, I grabbed a 5.0 HO core, rebuilt it with big valve ported early 351w heads and a semi hot [roller cam, efi friendly duration, but a LOT of lift!] and while the engine runs amazing, and on the highway its a screamer, at lower speeds, and doing "truck things" it is not really that great.
