I love the old FE motors but the lack of 4 sp auto is a bad deal unless you go after market aboout 2500 for a 4 sp upgrade to the old c 6. Going with with a 429/460 dropin is a good fit relative EZ to do.
I would like to hear from someone who has installed one with a auto O/D. What year O/D unit did you use and any problems you
makin it shift properly?
One of my boys had a 72 that had a tired 460 and a c6. He had the c6 rebuilt w/shift kit and rebuilt a 70 Merc 429 dropped in w/ duals. That truck would run up a steep hill quicker that most going down one. He still wishes he had it.

Od trannies for the 385 series engines are pricy. I'm installing a 460 c-6 into a 64 f-100 short bed. I'm using the 2.78 rear pumpkin from the 71 Lincoln M-3 that supplied the engine/tranny. The car got 14 mpg. The truck weighting 1 ton less than the car schould get at least 16 to 17 if I can keep my foot out of the carb.
