Took a look under my truck the transfer case looks a bit wet. No real drips on the floor. How do I check fluid level? At what mileage should the oil be changed? What type of oil is used? I drive my truck very little.
Looks wet by the transmission.
I have a pressure washer attachment that rolls on the ground to clean under trucks and cars. Do you think this might be a good thing to do to figure out what is leaking.
I see three drops, but they look further towards the front. Having owned several British made motorcycles & having ridden with Harley riders (me in front) & having owned my F-150 since 1986, I kind of look for wet ... and when under there, I pull the fill plug and insert my little finger or a wire to check. I change it warm every few years when the mood strikes.
"If it ain't leaked, best be checking it" is my motto.
I do not really see a "wet" spot at the 6 o'clock of the inout of output seal area of the xfer case. It looks like you have a leak fwd of the xfer case from either the rear of the oil pan, rear main seal, or the transmission and it is getting wind flung back there when you drive the truck. Touch the fluid, is it red (maybe p/s fluid?) or when your fingers are rubbed together, does it have the viscosity of eng oil?
The NP-205 uses 80/90 gear lube that is thick and stinks. A little drip will go a long way. X2 on the pic to check the level, pull the top plug with a adjustable wrench, and then stick a pinkie in there, should just touch the finger tip. Then rub fingers together to learn what 80/90 viscosity is like and then of course sniff it to see why I say it stinks. Lol To me it stinks just like PB Blaster.
A pressure washer is not going to get that oil off. But some spray brake cleaner sure will, and make sure to WEAR EYE PRO and be up wind and do not get under the drip. Good thing about brake cleaner it will dry FAST. Once all clean, insp it in a few days and see what is now showing "wet".
