302 oil pans

Still researching my 300 to 302 swap.

Looks like I might have found a good running 302 in a 81 2wd truck.

Will the oil pan from the 81 work in my 73 f150 2wd?

The junkyard guy says the 73-79 and 80-86 302 oil pans show different hollander #'s, but that just means they are not EXACTLY the same pan, but may still work.

will I need to find a 73-79 oil pan?

It is preferable to get the 73-79 oilpan since it is front sump, but the rear sump 80-86 pan should clear as long as you don't bottom out your suspension and put the tie rods into the pan. I have a rear sump in my 79 2wd without any problems. It's easier to change the oil too!

Warning: stupid gearhead story to follow, do not attempt!

Chad's right, those front sump pans are a PITA when comes time to change oil. The worst are the Milodon 302 pans like I have on mine, where the drain plug is on the SIDE of the front sump. I know what you're thinking, and you're correct: it won't clear the x-member. The first time I changed the oil with that thing I had to take it out as far as it would go, then hacksaw through the bolt because I couldn't even get a sawzall through there. Fortunately for me, the 24 hour Autozone miraculously carries the identical thread density and diameter that's the perfect length to fit in there, and they're on sale for $.89, even at 3 am. Now I've gotten used to doing the Milodon bolt-juggling oil change, so the procedure isn't quite the soap opera that it used to be. TK

thanks, I may actually get this done
1 more question.

Is the truck front sump pan the same as a car front sump pan?
(other than the milodon pan)

I may just go with the rear sump (the 300 thats in the 73 now is a rear sump )

I think the drain plugs are in different spots for car & truck pans but I'm not sure. They are physically interchangeable though.

Are the oil pans the same for 80-86 F150/Broncos in 4x4 or 2wd?
