So the frame has been finished, the front and rear axles rebuilt and converted to discs on the rear, transfer case and transmission rebuilt…. Now on to the body. Rather than repairing our cab - the truck had been rolled and even though I have a salvage roof I think I am better just finding a replacement cab. The current truck is a 1977 F150 4x4, short box Ranger XLT. Manual transmission. No AC. I am going to go to Desert Valley Auto Parts while I am in Phoenix tomorrow to see if I can find something. My question is - what “compatibility” issues do I need to be aware of, and what range of years and trucks can I look at? Are the cabs the same from 73-79 or should I focus on the later years? Is an F100 or an F250 cab the same? I know that the transmission tunnel has a different cutout for a 4x4, but since I have the cover panel I can use a non 4x4 cab - i just need to cut the tunnel opening out. Also understand that there were two different mounting points at the back of the cab to the frame but that both exist in all the cabs so you can just use what works for your frame? I am going to add AC so an AC equipped cab is fine.
AFAIK 73-79 cabs are pretty much the same. But earlier (73-76?) could have in cab fuel tank. X2 on the trans hump 2wd 4wd cover differences. Remember to take the dvrs door edge Warranty plate off the out going cab/door and move it to the new doner. Get a Dvrs side B pillar repop white sticker VCL (Vehicle Certification Label) but also called a (Safety Certification sticker) from Marti Auto. https://www.martiauto.com/itemselect...m?item=TAGD-70
None a/c cab does not have the big hole in the firewall for the a/c evaporator box. Dash is what is a/c or not, at least the places for the vents to mount. 73-early 77 has different style steering column and lower attachment point cover. Metal on earlier and plastic on later year. Plus the earlier has the smaller horn pad. Later has the larger one.
Also earlier years cab has just lap belts and then late year 77-79 has 3 point seat belt, with retractor mounted in B pillar.
I have a '77 F-150, the rear cab mounts on mine are inside the frame rails @ 24.20" apart. I do not recall there being holes in my cab for the rear cab mounts out side the frame @ 37.80" apart.
Thanks! Picked up a nice ‘77 cab today. Also got a short bed, tailgate, inner fenders and core support - all at Desert Vally Auto Parts. Great team there.
