Was going to change rear dif fluid in 2017 dually that has 30K that is used for towing 21K camper 90% of time. Dealer quoted a little under $300. He then quoted $525 to do rear and front diffs along with transfer case. Is it worth it to go ahead and do all 3?
Depends, how often are you using your four wheel drive and the conditions you are driving in. 30k miles is not much. I have a tendency to change stuff even when it’s probably not needed. I changed out my rear fluid twice (installed new cover) now but still have the original fluids in front diff and transfer case and I have roughly the same mileage. Transfer case is not scheduled for fluid replacement until 150k miles according to the owners manual. Just top off as needed until then.
The quotes from dealers for those services are INSANE. It's a very easy job to do, especially the transfer case which is two plugs, drain, and fill. Can't remember if the diffs have drain plugs on these or not but I like to pull the inspection cover anyhow and wipe the magnets clean. I did all of mine laying on my back in a gravel driveway and spent very little on fluids and one tube of gasket maker to seal the inspection covers back up. NO WAY I'd pay those ridiculous dealer prices for simple jobs.
Less than $200 using Supertrch fluid doing it yourself.
YES, do it yourself. I use Redline fluids in everything I own....everywhere. use said 2017, that 6r140 should use Mercon LV. I'd go Redline D6 for the trans and Tcase. And 75w90 for the front differential and Redline 75w140 for the rear. Don't forget to bleed your brakes.
costs me $500 for the engine, diffs, tcase, PS fluids (D6) and brake fluid. They don't make a transmission fluid for my truck. For dealer money, use RL and do it yourself. Ford's service intervals are SO THEY CAN CLAIM LOWER COST OF OWNERSHIP. Anyone that goes 150k , even 100k is NUTS. If you trade your truck every 8 years, the second owner is going to want to punch you for going that long.

The pump for the transfer case is still running in 2wd so you would be surprised how dark the fluid is. I changed everything at 30k miles on my dually. The T-case only takes 2 quarts of Mercon LV and is too easy to change.
Unless you are physically unable or won the lottery and have someone taking it to the dealer to deal with it, just do it yourself.
The rear differential has a drain plug and so does the transfer case. Get the limited slip additive at the dealer and I believe it is 3.8 qts of diff fluid. I just got the house brand diff fluid and used the ford additive.
I think the transfer case takes like 2.5 qts of transmission fluid.
Look up the levels but its a real easy job.
Also if its not a limited slip I wouldn’t even bother for now. They are designed for this kinda load.
No reason to do the front differential unless it got water in it.
IMHO, unless your in 4WD all the time I don't think the front diff is necessary. I would do the x-case (2 quarts of Mercon LV) and rear diff (75w-140) however just based on age and usage. On my SRW sterling, I need to remove the cover to empty the fluid, probably not a bad idea to pull the cover even if your DRW has a drain plug to clean the bottom of the housing and inspect the gears. I would get a lubelocker gasket if applicable to make the re-install process quicker.

I changed out the rear diff fluid in my 450 a couple of months ago with AmsOil severe gear 75/140. I was wondering about using additional friction modifier with the fluid change, so I called AmsOil tech support and asked them if the additional friction modifier was needed. Tech support said not needed, as the Severe Gear has plenty of it in the oil already. No chattering or noises from the rear diff since adding the AmsOil.
I used to do the diff fluid on my old RAM pretty often, and the RAM diff cover had a great reusable metal/rubber gasket and I never had to replace it.
Does Ford use gaskets like that or just RTV???
Knowing Ford it is probably RTV...
