I have a 2003 4WD that I'm looking to do an 05+ axle swap on some time in the future.
I have access to a 2006 Powerstroke that I can pull parts off right now but it's a 2WD. I'm pretty sure I can use the steering box off of it and if it's a hydroboost, the hydroboost hose from the steering box to brake booster but I'm wondering if there are any other parts I can use off of it that I'll need for the axle swap in the future like the radius arm, track bar, sway bar, coils and coil buckets, etc.
How many of those parts are the same from an 05+ 2WD to a 05+ 4WD?
Most of its different. I would hold off and look for a 05+ 4wd rolling chassis and get it all in one shot. You can typically find the for a grand or under. Sometimes even cheaper.
I mean I guess you could. But if it wasn't next to free I wouldn't fool with it. If you get a complete rolling chassis it should have one on it as well.

Unfortunately in my area Superduties never, and I mean NEVER appear in the junkyards. I don't know who snatching them up around here but you never see them.

Well I can get the box with the pitman arm and hose for under $70
The one in my vehicle right now is toast and wandering all over the place and I hear that the newer steering boxes give much less steering effort and I have bad shoulders and the one of my truck now is pretty heavy
Facebook marketplace and sometimes craigslist are your best friends when it comes to needing parts trucks. junkyards are obsolete here, its either pick and pull (whatever they are called) or copart
If I was swapping to newer axles, I would get the year when they improved the turning radius...Maybe I don't know what I'm talking about. I know the 450's started earlier, then I thought they started doing everything.
05, i think was coils and possibly larger brakes. not familiar with the timeline of changes

Yea 05+ is when it went to coild springs and turning radius is 1000 times better. I did the swap last year and it's surprisingly simple to do and just the turning radius you gain is worth it alone. You can do the swap in a weekend alone if you have all the parts needed. With just basic hand tools. No welding required.
I think the coil buckets are the same across the 05 to 07. Same dorman part.
I bought new Dorman's as my donors were fairly rusty, and they are a pain to get off (and the Dorman's arent a bad price). Did the fighting with the raduis arm brackets.
I did the swap last July. I have an Excursion so i was upgrading from a dying d50 (sparkles in the oil, amoung other issues). The turn radius is the best part. I was half way up a mountain last weekend and had to back out due to a gate, and that turn radius made it a dream (one of many senerios). Its also great for backing in the tt. Also got a lsd rear. It was a pile of work though (more than i care for anyway but i refreshed both axles, all seals, and prepped and painted everything). Mostly done by myself. Big upgrade though.
My donor was a rolling frame from a 2006 4wd 6.0l. frame was rusty, but the axles were still good. 600 Canuck bucks. Used a U-Haul car dolley to move it. I think it has low miles too because the internals looked nearly new. Wasn't even a mark were the diff oil was sitting against the diff cover.
Probably put 10k miles on it now, with towing. No regrets. Still got something to work out with the steering though.
Ford really did a lot of modernizing starting in 2005. Front leaf spring ride went away across the whole Super Duty line. They started doing the upfitter switches and built in trailer brake controllers. 450/550 went to the 10x225 bolt pattern wheels which is still used. Probably a ton of stuff I don't even know about. Bill Hewitt used to crow that the 2005-07 trucks were in many ways the best bang for the buck because of all upgrading and refining that took place around that time.
As stated above the coil buckets are the same across all years 05-07 (maybe newer but don't quote me on that).
But don't make the mistake in using 2wd coil buckets though, they are a different part number than the 4wd though they look similar.
I too am doing the conversion with an 07 axle in my 02. I have 95% of the parts. Steering is my final hurdle.

basically all that stuff you want to keep is all different between 2wd and 4wd trucks. when i did my 4wd swap, i honestly cant think of one thing that swapped over, even shock mounting hardware is different. i waited until i found a rolling chassis somewhat "close" and drove to go get it
