I want to ad a 3rd brake light on my 49, looking for something that I can attach to the inside of the rear window. Was thinking of using a LED light strip, something thin but not noticeable until ya hit the brakes.
Anybody done this.... suggestions?
I used the kit from "mac's antiques" or "obsolete and classic ford", led strip light encased in alu - mounting was not 100% straight forward if I remember right but that has been years (2011).... I seem to think they had just a short alu base and I had to extend that so I could find some place to mount it instead of in the rubber gasket. Quick skim of macs and they have nothing listed for 48 at all now...
I just spent a minute hunting through my xl spreadsheed hoping I could find the exact part number - no luck
I repurposed a trailer backup light/brake led on the roll pan where the license plate was for white lite and 3rd brake light. A little more involved than an in cab rear window brake light but what the hey.
I got one on Ebay- has tape on it, stuck to inside of glass, it was about 10. shipped. Not as bright as I wanted but it's OK. Best pic of it I could find.....
fwiw, macs still has a lot of options listed that are very similar - they just all have tilting bases, you could check theirs out as well before comitting... course know your specs first, width, acceptable height, etc...
If I had it to do over, I would have just gotten one of aliexpress - they have quite a heck of a lot of options.. I just got a little strip "3rd brake" from there for red utility lighting on something else. It has a high (brake) and a low (daytime running lamp - europe specs rear red DRL's not just forward white) and was $4.44.
Be sure to vet your aliexpress seller and check the ratings - it's like amazon marketplace, anyone can become a "seller".
I did mine similar to Greg's except I mounted it on the top of the rear window instead of the bottom. I wanted it frenched in the roof line but couldn't find anyone willing to do it. Sorry no picture.

"frenched into the roofline" - like the 3rd generation Rangers and '99-16 F250 superduty's?
The Ranger and F250's have very sharp transitions from rear to roof, but I bet with enough junkyard surfing a guy could find a model with a very slow nice curve like the F1's...
The 1st and 2nd gen Rangers have a very similar roofline to the 3rd which works out nice for using a 3rd gen light..
I found a pic of mine, but it is a view from side looking into the cab so you see the back of the light not how the light looks from behind.
I just picked up a '52 F1 (driveable but definitely needs some loving) a few weeks ago and that was what I was going to do. I'm gonna try to use something thin and long like @jniolon only I was planning on attaching it to the top of the rear window right at the seal.
I've seen smoked ones out there on the net so you might try that also.
I can foresee a problem with that mounting location. Anyone in a SUV, hummer etc - big vehicle behind you (the majority of people here in CO where everyone seems to drive an SUV) will be fine. The folks driving 'full size" small sedans (like civics) or econoboxes would never be able to see that with the tailgate on.

Mehh...how is that location much different than a spoiler mount?
