The 460 in my 87 F250 just developed a mild, intermitant knock. The oil preassure has been slowly decreasing lately so I suspect the main bearrings. I've been planning on puling this motor and doing a mild build but not this soon. Any ideas on how to limp it along a little while?
To limp along I would use a thicker dino based oil. Syn is good but too thin for old engines. Or a can of STP is really thick and may help an engine on it's last legs.
You might also try to run some cleaner thru the engine. I would use a bottle or two of Techron, that sometimes will clean enough carbon out of the head to minimize knock. Or higher octane gas may help.
If your pressure is dropping it probably is a sign of old age and time for a rebuild.
Thanks for the replies, it's not a fuel knock or ping, it's definetly coming from the bottom end. When I bought the truck I knew I would be rebuilding the motor I just hoped to get a few more miles out of it. Funny thing is that it has almost 200,000 miles, is bone stock and is on it's last leg but it still has tons of power, gotta love the 460.
Hmmm... Sounds familiar, only I am dealing with a 302... I was told by someone with the same problem that he put Lucas oil additive in the oil and the sound went away... But yes, monitor the sound, and if anything changes, shut it down and remove the oil pan and see what is happening. It could be a connecting rod big end with a bad bearing...
