Friend of mine just bought a beautiful 2002 crew cab lariat with 102k miles on it. Completely unmolested and showroom clean. It has the original air box and one of the clip receivers is broken. Turbo is clean but want to keep it that way. We've looked for an AIS but apparently there are no new ones left to be had. Told him I'd check here to see if anyone had one on the shelf they wanted to part with or might know where to find one. You can message me if you know.
We did find one on Facebook but it doesn't have the battery tray so if you have one of those let me know.
Mods i know there are some rules about buying and selling in the forum so if I've crossed a line please delete and let me know.
I’d consider buying the AIS and sourcing the battery tray separately. That seems simpler than finding an AIS since those are discontinued. I imagine you may be able to modify a tray to fit somehow.
I found this part number based on a web search. F81Z10732AB
But a couple of sites that popped us show it as discontinued.
Good luck on the search. I love the AIS and really wish someone would start building them again.
Thanks Jason, and yes he is talking to the Facebook guy. If he can get this one then this is probably the route he'll go. Just figured I'd post it here in case someone had pulled one for something that flowed more like an S&B.
FWIW that is my truck exactly, aside from lustrous clear coat. All horizontal clear coat surfaces on mine got destroyed by ash/retardant a few giant wildfires ago.
I see Dieselers ads all the time. High quality, high prices.
I was wondering about the price myself. For items like this, keep an eye on fleabay. I have had good success finding hard to find things on there with due diligence. Pick your max price, set to bid automatically and snipe it with seconds to go.
If the AIS is a reasonable price and in serviceable condition, I too would encourage he but it. Tell him we said the truck looks great!
I thought so too, which is why I went there to search right off. Found nothing, not even using the metal tray part number. Maybe they’re no longer available.
Thank you for that. I will update it right after I make this post to help...

Hope all are well and late Happy Thanksgiving.
What a clean looking truck. I was fortunate enough to find 2 AIS units...one local and one over a couple states, but it was free...both were unmodified. I would highly recommend one for your application. I wouldn't let the battery tray...or there lack of...hold you back as neither of mine had them. I've also seen a couple since then I've put out here for folks, which didn't have the battery tray either. You can do one of two things...some cut the original plastic battery tray to work, but I choose to make the steel battery tray to work. There are threads here for the mod on the plastic tray. I just went to a salvage yard and picked up 2 passenger side battery trays out of an F series trucks...they come in a wide variety of tucks. I made sure to get all the bolts and clip nuts with them...though you'll use most of the hardware out of the original plastic unit.
Well it looks like he will get the local Facebook AIS. I have sent an email to Riffraff to see if they still have the battery trays and if not we will use the bwguardian procedure to create one.
As you would suspect the cost of a 100K mile unmolested near perfect truck is high. mid to Low $30's with shipping across the country. The truck has a fresh paint job and my buddy does restos and has dealt with paint and body since he was a kid. He was very happy with the paint job and he's REALLY picky about these things. No overspray anywhere and things that aren't supposed to get paint were all taped off, etc ,etc. With that in mind it looks to be about a $10k paint job. So you could find a low mile truck like this or one that needs paint in the $20s and have it painted or paint it yourself. He's got several projects in work and didn't want another so he's super happy with this one.
He likes to restore 70 model Ford trucks. Here's a couple of pics of his work and 72 with the roof cut off to get rid of rust and pitting holes.
Clay at Riffraff emailed first thing this morning that he doesn't have any more battery trays and they were discontinued. Looks like we'll be doing a guardian fab job.
He does good work but it can take a while. I think he painted parts of that truck 3 times because he didn't like how it came out.
His preference is original, including paint color (most of the time). That's why he wants the AIS because it looks as close to original as possible.

That would be a neat trick... figuring out how to match the hue and sheen of of the not quite, not exactly, not really, blackish, translucent, dry, smooth, and silky coating of most Ford OEM chassis parts that are not part of the frame.
