I was looking into buying a 2003 F250 6.0 Powerstroke 4X4 ZF6. The owner says the truck's hpop went bad and now it doesn't run. It only has 113K miles. Is it strange at that low miles a 6.0 hpop went bad and the fuel injectors and headstuds are all fine? I feel like theres gotta be some other common 6.0 issues if the hpop is bad. Does it sound reasonable that just the hpop may be bad?
I'm sure others with more experience will chime in soon, but it is quite possible that the HPOP is bad. Your truck being an 03 with the log oil rails, is not know for having leaks on the standpipes and dummy plugs like the newer 6.0 s do.

Absolutely possible. They are not the best design and can go out without any warning.
Yes the 03-04 models had many issues with the hpop due to the fact that its an aluminum housing and it basically beats its self up from all the other metal moving parts inside the pump causing grooves to be worn in the pressure bore causing low icp pressure. I've seen the entire pump explode cracking the entire housing of the pump. The 03-04 high pressure oil delivery from the pump to the smaller oil rails on top of injectors is basically problem free. Maybe a screw in sandpipe may leak but its very rare to have a high side leak on the 03-04. In 05 thou they made the pumps great!!! Cast iron big beefy and made from the correct metal......but then they redesigned the delivery to injectors and the oil rails and had nothing but issues to date with high side oil leaks at the dummy plugs, the stc fitting on the pumps, d-rings on injectors, oil rail nipples , standpipes, not to mention oil leaks from the cracked rear cover when the stc fitting blows off bending the branch tube with such force it hits the rear cover causing an oil leak and a new branch tube which you need to pull both heads and trans to gain access. So international did a solid with the new cast iron pump in 05 but screwed up in other areas that kept my bills paid for many years fixing those oil leaks. They need a 05 pump with the old 03 delivery system and it would be perfect. Anyways. Good luck.
The HPOP that came in my Ford reman motor has been fine for over 75,000 miles so far. I was thinking of putting a new one in from CNC Fab, but when I showed images of it to them I was told it was better design and keep running it.
When you look at images of used and reman HPOPs on eBay and elsewhere, you can see that there are differences in design. And not just if the ball is replaced with a plug. There are differences in the castings.
I think the worst of the reputation of these came from the rebuilt ones that people purchased from Ford. They could be failed right out of the box. And Ford was contracting with Franklin Power Products to rebuild these, the same company did such a poor job on rebuilding my replacement engine from Ford.
In agriculture and aircraft, there are rebuilding kits for this style of pump, and they work well. It’s a shame that that was never available for these.
Sept. 29 2003 is considered the late '04 (change to a wavy oil rail), but there were several more running changes in 2004. One tweak was in Dec. '03 (IIRC) to make them a "late-late" '04 (identified by a vertical GPCM). This change initiated the new part number for the engine harness.
The truck build date is May 31, 2003. But that really doesn’t matter since the engine was replaced with the Ford reman. The reman consists of the early 18 mm block, the unique 20 mm service heads with also the unique rocker box for an 03 and God only knows what else.
I have an ‘03 Ex 6.0 PSD with an 11/02 build date, and to my knowledge the original HPOP. What should I look for as a replacement to help with reliability?
