I have a '52 F2 239. Its still original 6v pos ground. The freshly rebuilt gen has three terminals with only one clearly marked. My factory engine wiring harness is all there, but all the ends are frayed and some ring terminals are gone, so its no help identifying what wire goes where. I believe I have this sorted but I would like some reassurance or correction before I hook up the battery! The largest stud facing rearward is the ARM which is also the largest gauge wire at the voltage regulator. The two smaller studs facing the drivers side are the field and ground. Only the FIELD is marked, so the other is GRND. Have I got this right? Did I miss anything?
Thank y'all very much in advance, this forum is an invaluable resource. I wish I could be as much help as everyone here is to me!
Thanks for the quick reply. Sometimes it helps just to say it "out loud" so to speak. Always nice to have somebody else more knowledgeable confirm! Got the engine wiring about done this afternoon. We'll see by the smoke, or hopefully lack of, how well I did shortly 🙃
If the generator was just rebuilt you might want to double check to make sure it's polarized. Very easy to do. With the Battery connected just disconnect the Field and Battery wires off the voltage regulator and touch them together. You should see a small spark. Now reconnect them. When you start the truck and give the motor some 1500 or so RPM you should see it charge on your Amp meter.
Thanks, guys! I'm almost ready for an engine run test. I got the engine un-siezed, then replaced the starter. Then all the battery cables (00), then the solenoid (ground activated). I did get it to start and run, briefly, after disconnecting what little wiring was left. That led me to replacing both water pumps, getting both new belts after three tries. Whatever happened to "they're all the same"? Bent pulley and rough bearings in the generator, got that rebuilt. Made a temporary tank and cleaned the fuel pump, got it plumbed to the carb. Next problems probably going to be the carb itself LOL. I asked the NAPA guys why a carb kit is $80? "COVID" they say with a straight face... Replaced all the engine wiring yesterday, one wire at a time with appropriate gauge and colors. I had saved the old tires from one of the farm trucks years ago, got them mounted and balanced. Good grief... I just want to drive it around a little
I call that "Johnny Cashing it". After his song One Piece at a Time.
Trouble is the next line is "And it didn’t cost me a dime". Which my wife and my pocketbook know is not true! 😄
