Hey there, I got a 1995 f350 with an e40d and 240k on it with a modified valve body and I'm starting to run into some problems, mainly slipping and it only happens in overdrive and 3rd after converter lockup, these problems occur when I accelerate and it slips a tiny bit, I belive it's tourqe converter slipping a tad. It shifts fine in all the gears, a little hard from first to second, The fluid smells a little burnt (like burnt clutch), I just did filter and fluid to try to help a bit, it didnt really help, going on a 4 hour road trip with a camper very soon that's been planned for a bit, need to know If I should put some Lucas oil trans fix in it, please help!! Planning on dropping trans as soon as I get back just need to see if I will make it
Do as you wish, but I would not plan that trip until you get the transmission fixed. Otherwise, it might be a very memorable trip.
You could pressure test the transmission and see what is going on.
I am not a fan of snake oil and with all the reports of any of that stuff not working [or causing additional problems] I do not understand why people still buy it.
Turn your hazard lights on and go for another drive. This will keep the converter from locking. Do you still notice it slipping?
If this doesn't work on the gas trucks, like the old IDI diesel trucks, someone please correct me. If if the hazards don't keep the converter from locking, you can just ever so lightly press the brake pedal, jut enough to trigger the brake lights and gently ride the brakes, to keep the converter unlocked too. You only need to do either for a few seconds, to see if you can still feel the trans slipping.
Well, that's kinda good in a sense that you could toss a used or the lowest priced reman converter in there to buy ya some time before a trans swap/rebuild.
The bad part is, if you load the truck up with a camper, it's going to slip the lockup disc even more. I guess you could just let it burn the disc up, but once it can't lock anymore, you'll have a flashing od light, the trans will run a lot warmer with an unlocked converter too and fuel economy will take a big hit.
The good part is, since the drive gear discs are not slipping, she shouldn't leave ya stranded......Key word shouldn't.
If you don't mind probably finishing up the converter for a trip, then so long as you can keep trans temps at or below 225F for the most of the time, she'll likely take ya on the camping trip and even back home...........I'd dare the risk. That new filter will be full by the time ya get home haha.

it seems as if the drive gears are slipping i just took it for a ride to check and it might be, I can't really tell, before lock up I can't really feel it shift
no I don't feel it slip when I do this, it's wierd
You know what I would probably do, just so that I didn't fill the filter with clutch material; I would probably tap into the TCC line and ground it to prevent the converter from even locking at all and just watch the trans temps.
You can probably search like "e4od converter lockup switch mod" or something like this. You'll probably suffer with a flashing od light, cus it the ecm will sense the converter isn't locking, when it should be locked............But with a camper on, you'll probably burn her up and suffer with the code anyway, so might as well the safer method. This way here, the converter will remain in the same shape as it is in now.

Oh, well that would change everything. If the level is full and the trans gears are slipping, then she's done. Don't put a load on like a camper and expect to make it home. You'll have to know 100% or just take the car and a tent haha.

I can't tell, it drives like it did for the last year besides i can tell it shifts solid into 3rd and overdrive due to converter locked
Maybe get someone else to drive it, to see if they can tell where the slip is? You're not concerned with shift firmness or softness. Just what happens while in gear.

while in gear it seems like it kinda slips but it could also be the fact the tourque converter Ain't locked yet once the tq locks it doesn't slip at all and I can tell until overdrive
Ah ok. I bet what you're feeling is torque converter stator failure. With 200k plus miles on her, that's not much of a surprise. Yeah, go ahead and run her. Just know the converter could less lose at any time, she's on borrowed time. If she scatters, she'll take the trans with it. Once it's locked, your in kinda a safe zone. Just go easy on it, getting up to speed, but just know driving it is a risk now, just in general, let alone hauling a camper.
If it's good otherwise, you could swap in a used converter before she blows and get who knows how many more miles out of it.
