On June 2nd of 2004 I become elligible for my Sabatical. For salaried employees at my company with 7 years of continuous employment, we recieve 2 months of paid time off :-)
My wife recently started as an attorney and will probably have very little time off. So, I'll pretty much be on my own. The good news, with my salary continuing and hers still coming in, we will be reasonably well funded. We have no children, just one very spoiled 105lb White german Shepherd.
Any suggestions on what I should do for this time off?
Some of my thoughts:
1. Packing the dog in my 67/69 project and just driving wherever the road leads with Mastercard in tow.
2. Driving to Cabo San Lucas (again in the 67/69 project with the pooch) , eating shrimp and drinking maragritas for almost 2 months (scuba diving, fishing and tending bar to offset the costs). Renting a nice suite and recruiting friends and family to come visit.
3. Finding another project (Probably a DeTomoaso Pantera). This is less likely due to the continued spousal anger over the current truck projects :-)
Get some sort of RV, be it in the bed, behind the bumper, or solo, and just GO.. drive anywhere you want, go see some FTE members, have fun, and relax.. It is called a Walkabout, not a sabbatical, so get used to the name, and come see us all. having an RV means NO hotel bills.
I recommend it to everyone. I enjoyed it so much last month, I am going on another this month, starting about the 12th. I have no rv to take, this time, so it will cost more..

So do you care if I use your avatar as mine?
Im making a new one and I want to use that in it also
i need a walkabout bad. i get the urge to just pack the old truck, go find some great trails to explore nature and camp for a month. get away from it all. just don't have the time or the funds. i think thats why i want to so bad. i think i might just do it anyways and charge my card up a little. i never do that and i don't think once would kill me. oh well
Wow, 2 months off. The Cabo idea sounds great (look up Mr. Hagar while you're there, tell him I said "hi"), but where else have you been? Henry Ford's Greenfield Village outside Detroit? Colonial Williamsburg? Cape Cod (one of the most beautiful spots in the U.S., if you don't mind traffic jams)? Get on Amtrak's Coast Starlight in L.A. and go up the coast to Seattle and Vancouver.
I'm assuming you'll be doing this in the summer months, so find your way to my neighborhood, the Finger Lakes of New York State. From June through September, it's a beautiful place to visit, and very reasonably priced. So much to do I can't list it all, but you won't be bored, that's for sure.
Beautiful Women- this can only lead to trouble but I have to be honest :-)
boating, fishing, scuba diving
skiing, boarding water or snow
Dogs (particularly my dog)
fine dining
live music, blues/rock/country
old trucks, fast cars, motorcycles (crotch rockets, not hawgs)
One of my other more risky options: riding a Ducati or Aprilia through much of Europe! Just afraid riding a motorcyle in the wrong lane would be dangerous.
Things to avoid: cubicles, micro-managers, productivity reports

Might I recommend a trip through Wyoming and Montana, you are relatively close. There is a lot to see, and I got no where near it all even though I lived there for 18 years.
Around June there is some of the most beautiful country.
Shoot me an email if you are interested, I will be home for the summer and I can give you a lot more ideas should you decide to come up my way!
