Engine clank???

Now I know the motor is 22 years old and at 170k, I have no right to complain, but, I've got a clanking noise and just curious to what it is. It only happens when my foot is on the gas. If I'm coasting or idling, no clank. Its not the pinging thats heard from low octane, but more like a clank. And its not really all that loud. Any ideas on what I might be hearing? I'm getting ready to put some new tires on it and drive it a little more regularly and just want to know where I might stand.

Thanks

Neil

From: Wanatah In,
Most likely lifters, I have a very loud clack coming out of mine but unfortunately new lifters didnt fix the problem.

I just drove it 600 miles over the weekend and got better mileage than I have in a long time(17.7mpg).

I wouldnt be concerned about a light click, Just drive it..

Fortunately right now, if it dumps on me its no big deal. My wife and I both have seperate cars. But eventually, we want to sell her car and I take the truck as a daily driver. So, I want to work out as much as I can before we get to that point. And, the longer it runs, the longer we can save at least one car payment. Of course, I know that no matter how hard I try, something will go wrong (Good ole Murphy!). In any case, I'll make sure I keep my cell phone with me. Its been a while since I've driven an old vehicle, and I've gotten accustomed to a vehicle that I generally don't have to think about. So, I guess its an adjustment.
