Just picked up a full hydraulic Switch N Go installed on my 13 F550 4x4 now I need a PTO what are my options should I just look for someone selling a stock take off unit does anyone make a simple kit I can use with my upfitter switches ? I had heard of a possible way to use the power steering system to run it ?
PTOs are very specific for the specific variant of transmission in the truck as well as the pump being run. For example, there is a different PTO used on a 2013 F-550 depending if it has a gas engine and has the 5R110 transmission or the diesel and a 6R140 transmission. The PTO model used for even a specific model of transmission varies. A 6R140 depending on PTO manufacturer may use a different PTO depending on if it's used on a F-250 through F-550 diesel, a F-650 or F-750 diesel, if it's a gas engine, or if it's 2WD vs. 4WD. You would also need to know the mounting pattern of the pump to the PTO if it is direct-attach, or if it's a divorced pump with a driveshaft. You would also need to know the RPM the pump wants to be run in order to get the PTO gear reduction correct. You would need to provide the type of engine and what pump you intend to run on the PTO to find an exact part number. You could try to find a take-off PTO but I would first find at least the PTO model number you need to fit your exact transmission and then find a PTO with that same model number and an attached pump in order to make sure you get everything correct.
The alternative is to do what many do today and just use an electric motor-powered hydraulic pump. A power steering pump won't work very well. The specs required for a Switch N Go hydraulic setup are 3000 PSI pressure and 12-15 gallons/minute flow rate. A typical power steering pump used in this size of truck will make only about 1500 PSI and 2-3 gallons/minute flow.
