Ok, some of you know I put a CB in my truck......now I cannot transmit and recieving is real weak. or at least If I can transmit I cannot copy when anyone replies back, it was working just fine on thursday on my trip down, was working great, and that was in the rain the whole trip, transmissions clear as day for about a mile....started to fade after that (remember I havae a crappy antenna right now)
I cannot visibly SEE anything wrong, is it possible my cheapo antenna just...crapped..out on me?
what jr said is probably true. otherwise make sure all your connections are good, and the fact you say "cheapo" antenna might be the case too. what kind of antenna is it?
I agree with TheWiz there.. check your SWRs
90% of people Id say never even check them, they just throw them in the truck
I made my CB talk a lot further and sound a ton better by setting my SWRs
go to a cb shop they can check them and they usually do it for free or just a couple bucks, also make sure you have 14 feet of coax for you attenta. i like the francis fibergalss attentas, they are cheap about 14 bucks for a 6 footer but they work really well, i have had them on all my semis the last 9 years.
oh and if you got the extra cash have your radio tuned and peaked, no need to go for the big echo box or the mod kit just get a good tune and peak. that gets you receive and transmit all dialed in. and make sure you attenta is grounded well, makes all the difference in the world believe me. good luck and see you on the road sometime, my handle is LUCKY 2
When you buy your CB (most high end ones have the "calibration" mode built in) If not buy a SWR meter. It tells you the "Standing Wave Ratio" there is a 2 position switch (don;t have one in front of me and been a long time since I did) on the one setting it should not come off of the left peg, on the other setting it should be above 1.5. (1:1.5 or less) for best range. Don't skimp on the antenna either, and don't go for the biggest just because it looks cool either, talk to a CB shop and get the one that will work the best for your application.
