Hey guys. I recently replaced my intake gaskets rebuilt, my injectors did timing cover water pump and new pulleys and belts on my 1994 460.
I think my timing is a little advanced, but if you listen to this video, there’s a knocking or snapping that is happening and that never had happened before. The truck also seems to be smoking quite a bit more than it used to. sort of half together, so not sure if that could be a smog issue. But if you could listen to this video and let me know your thoughts on what that could be.
You THINK your timing is a little advanced?
How about using a timing light and pull the spout plug?
THAT is the only way to time it
Start there
You rebuilt? the injectors?
Explain
Timing is 12 degrees advanced. Yes I used a timing light, which is within the 10-13 degree specification.
injectors got new o rings, filters, and spacers. I’m sorry that was so tricky to understand.
found some Loose exhaust manifold bolts, which indicated an exhaust leak. That helped mostly to resolve the issue. There is a little bit of valve clatter issues. I will be going back in though, as my china wall seal did not hold on the front of the new intake manifold. I used the rtv as specified, instead of using the rubber end gasket but it did not hold.
the smoke was due to a fuel pressure issue, one of the injectors was leaking and the system i am assuming was over compensating and caused the truck to run rich. After about 3 minutes of driving that resolved itself.
I’m a 19 year old kid fully rebuilding my truck. Sorry I may have asked a dumb question, but to me that’s the only way to learn.
10 degrees is the timing spec not 12 or 13
But 12 is close enough that the engine should not spark knock
Good luck
It's possible your injectors are not squirting enough fuel and that is the knock
You can monitor the fuel pressure as you manually fire each injector for a test
