I have a 1990 F150 with 6x,xxx miles. It has been in our family since new. The truck gets driven every now and then. It has been super reliable. Even if it sits a month or two, turn the key and it fires right up. I drove it last week and went to start it the next day and the battery is completely flat with no warning. The battery is eight years old so I chalked it up to just being an old battery. I put a new battery in it and it seems it has a draw in it with the truck turned off. I also noticed while driving, it is not charging as normal. Is this a voltage regulator issue, alternator issue or both?
No lights are on. Just noticed the gauge leaning to the left 1/4 tick from the far left.
Could still be a failing alternator. When mine started to go, my gauge did the same. The alternator still spun freely, no noise, overheating, nothing. Simply stopped charging properly.
Check your alternator when engine off and cold. The rectifier (diodes) can burn out. If cold soaked (sitting and cooled down, not warm from running the engine), and the alternator feels warm it’s the alternator. It causes a continuous draw on the battery. I’ve had it happen a couple of times on older alternators.
