Carplay Android Auto add-on for Ford Sync 2
Carplay Android Auto add-on for Ford Sync 2
I just purchased the Carabc/Road Top Wireless Carplay Android Auto add-on unit for the Ford Sync 2 radio and am interested in hearing from, talking to others that also have or are interested in this unit. At around $200 it is an inexpensive option to add Carplay Android Auto (hereon referred to as 'CP/AA') features to the Sync 2 radio. It is fairly easy to install and does require the removal of the radio screen so an interface board can be installed. I have replaced my digitizer (touch screen) in the past and found it to be an easy process. I have not as of yet installed the CP/AA unit (in my 2015 F350) as there are some extra connections that I am interested in learning about. The unit has an HDMI IN port, a front video (rca) port, a rear video (rca) port, and a 360 camera control port. The CP/AA box utilizes your existing rear camera so I am not sure if the other camera ports can be used or not.
The way I understand this add-on unit works is that your radio will start up in the native Sync 2 operating system. With the double press of one of your original entertainment control buttons, the unit will switch to the CP/AA operating system. You can double press the control button again to switch back and forth between the two operating systems. It looks like you have to plug the CP/AA audio output into the Sync 2's AUX input so the Sync 2 can control the audio output. I am currently using my Synce 2 aux input for my XM Radio, and am wondering if I can use a splitter or if there would be another method to make that work.
This is why I am looking for others who know or are interested in this add-on, so we can get the most out of this unit. Yes, you can upgrade to the Sync 3 or add a totally 3rd party radio. But again, this is only around $200.
