on my meter you can hold the leads together and adjust the ohm to zero. i'll try that other test tommorrow. when you say +12 you mean pos. terminal on batt? and other lead? ground?

well, i went to exchange alt. it's fine. test showed pushing 14 v. i'm fixin' to hook it back up with new reg. i still worry about that test ohm from feild connection at reg. wiring harness. but, everything is new and good and wires show no burns, tears, etc. i think it may work this time. that's it for now, thanks to all. i probably have too many threads on this post already. 'bout ready to write a book on charging sytems for ford trucks. hahaha

Sorry, I guess I misunderstood what had happened. The only time you could burn up your alternator is if the alternator was SUPPLYING a shorted/grounded system and your regulator didn't die first. Sorry about MY misunderstanding. It seems Mike W didn't jump to conclusions like I did. Glad you have it fixed.

no sweat hwford, i always appreciate any help. i take it all in and use what i think is most logical solutions. i'm still workin on her. but it's tough during week. i only get a short time after work.

also, i have this on other posts, but i'll ask here too. is it o.k. for alt. battery wire to be linked directly to field wire from alt? i'm tryin' to do a test and i'm being very precautious so i don't ruin my batt.,alt., or any more regulators.

If you run +12 directly to the field, just don't rev the engine too high. I did a test with my motor driven test stand and was able to get 70 volts out of the alternator.
