Whoever told you that is full of it. I didn't even use the ARB switch harness. I wired the two fat red fused power leads to the battery, and the two black ground of the light grey plug on the compressor to a frame ground. The purple wire off the small black plug went to an upfitter and the black to the same frame ground as the other two. Works fine. All the upfitter is doing is taking the place of your bed switch.
This is what you need to do to get it to work how you want (see PDF.)
The ARB switch is meant to be in the cab, which is why you have 5 pins. For your application you only need 3, but I put in the drawing all 5 incase you want to wire it like that. All this diode/resistor/whatever talk is rubbish.
Perfect that is exactly what I was looking for, Is that a 5amp fuse you have in the red dotted line? Seems like all I need is that and I am good to go.
There is a relay built into the compressors. The diagram is meant for in cab use as mentioned. The two Diode connections, one goes to any ignition ON source, the other is used to tap into dash lights to light the switch up at night. Thats the intended wiring solution by ARB. The OP is doing a custom install for always on, so just put a switch between the compressor and 12V and do away with the rest, dump the ARB switch, replace with a toggle switch, wire it all to the battery, solution met.

Yes, 5A fuse to supply power to the switch. You could use less but those ARB switches are probably good for 20A so 5A is plenty and more than enough to trigger the relay on the compressor.
I wired the power directly to the battery, the ground to an existing ground on the frame on the driver's side next to the spare tire, and the purple wire to the upfitter switch. That is the only one that is needed to trigger on the compressor. You can just wire the purple wire to the switch, and from the battery to the source side of the switch.
