I am changing the oil in my 1954 F100 Dana 44. The fill plug is square and has been in a long time. I soaked it in pb tonight and will go at it again tomorrow. Does anyone know what size square wrench would fit it without rounding it off? Every socket I put on it was loose and I don’t want to chew it up to get it off.
My plan it to tap on it with a hammer, heat, and more pb. But any other advice is appreciated.
It is 3/4" and you should use an appropriate 4 or 8 point socket. A 6 point socket won't do, and while a 12 point socket may fit, it is more prone to round the edges.
Do you have any 3/4" drive socket wrench extensions? You could use one "backwards" to give you a square point out away from the diff case to put an open end wrench or a big crescent wrench on. Harbor Freight has pretty cheap ones if you don't have any.

You sir are a genius! I have been scrolling through the web looking for the wrench in socket with no glory! Thanks a million
From eBay. I have one, works well. Blackhawk 151. It has ends for female and male plugs. It is adjustable to get a snug fit. I also have a Blackhawk dog bone bung wrench
You need to put a little more muscle into it as these pipe plugs in the Dana 44 cover are not that tight. I've never had one I couldn't get out and I've never damaged one and I've had a lot of trucks from the heart of the rust belt.
worst case you ruin it and I'll sell you a used cover and plug
He's trying to get the fill plug out. The drain plug is in the cover.
the fill plug is in the cover and it is a male plug
the DRAIN plug is in the case/housing and is a inverted pipe plug
I wouldn't even bother with the drain plug, I'd pull the cover, clean, inspect, and replace cover gasket
but the OP did say fill plug
