I've read maybe 50 different forums and always get different answers. Hoping I can get clarification here.
I have a 1972 f100 with power brake booster and m/c. drums on all 4. Would like to change disc up front and ok with keeping drums on the back.
I have sourced a 1978 f100 and purchased the disc conversion off of it. I picked up ibeams, spindles, rotors, brake lines, proportion valve and brake line brackets off the truck. booster and m/c if it had any were all gone.
I read that my 72 steering linkage ball joints will not fit on the new 78 spindle. and the guy i purchased this setup was 3 hours away (was nearby for a trip) so i did not want to drive that far just for the linkages. I ended up ordering all new moog drag link, inner and outer tie rods.
my main questions are:
1) can i keep my power brake booster and m/c and just get proportion valve?
2) if answer is no, can i keep booster and just replace m/c and add proportion valve?
3) whatever part(s) i need to replace to make this setup work, please add part numbers or link's to recommended parts.
Only looking for help from people that have done this swap. disc front, drum rear only.
Whatever parts I have to add to make this work, say i wanted to add disc on the rear, will the new parts i add work for disc/disc conversion? or will i than need other stuff when the time comes?
You will need new linkage (Moog) for a 77-79 and the PS pitman arm. As far as the booster and MC shouldn't be a problem but will need to add a proportioning valve to the rear to control the F-R bias.
i did buy the steering linkage from moog. i did not buy the pitman arm for a 1978 f100. yours saying my 1972 pitman arm will not fit the 1978 steering linkage ?
You need a master cyl for disc/drum. Drum/drum master is not correct. Get a master for a 78 F100 with front disc brakes from your local Napa. Combo valve will be a PV2, available from Summit racing.
Master cyl came from Napa, booster and PV2 valve came from Summit Racing.
I had a kit from Pirate Jack on it before with the generic dual diaphragm booster and Corvette style master cyl, same PV2 valve. I never liked the way the pedal felt. The master and booster went into my recycling bin and I bought the OEM stuff. The brakes are great now.
You can use your stock booster if the stud spacing for the master is the same. I tossed mine, thinking I needed a dual diaphragm because of largish cam. I never got the chance to mount the 75 master to the 72 booster because I tossed it. Prolly should've kept it.
The bracket for the combo valve was a generic bracket that can be bought from Summit. I remember that I had to modify the bracket because there wasn't enough room under the master for the valve. Most people mount the valve down on the frame like the later trucks. There are also brackets that locate the valve off to the side of the master. https://www.summitracing.com/parts/leb-9005
