I have a 1988 F150 302 C6 trans converted to run on a carburetor. I have an intake off an old 302 from the woods (possibly from 1979) and I got a Holley 2300 Street Avenger carb. The overall conversion went well and I've been driving around for a little bit, and it just started backfiring through the carb when revved up over 1500 rpm. The carb is getting enough fuel pressure (6.5 psi) and the fuel level is where it should. There is a pretty good exhaust leak coming from the driver side of the engine but I can seem to make it go away. I can't tell if there's a vacuum leak because of the exhaust leak. Also I recently found that the intake rocker arm on the 8th cylinder is loose but I can't tighten the bolt anymore. I replaced the rocker arm with the same one from a different truck but similar year and it was still loose. Also I took my spark plugs out and just look at the pictures it's not good. They're set out from 1-8 in the picture.

confirm your using 302 non HO spark plug firing order as well
To expand on my first reply, make sure that the pushrod didn't come out of the lifter on that #8 cylinder. Did you remove the air pump system? Is it possible that exhaust leak is from the back of the head?

I don't think that the pushrod came out of the lifter but could be a possibility. I'll have to check on that exhaust leak on Friday when I'm back with it. I hope it's not the cam because that almost that last thing I want to do right now.
Also I was talking with someone and they said that it could be running too lean and pre igniting. I know that there's enough fuel getting to the carb but I'm not sure if the fuel is making its way through the carb like it should. I'm going to try to play around with it over the weekend and see if anything works before going all the was down to the cam.
You started threads to ask other questions about starting and drivability problems then never answered when people responded to help you. Now you have ripped out the EFI for a carburetor. Why would you do that? Honestly, I don’t expect you to respond to this thread either.

Yes I should've responded more to those threads. That's on me. After to talking to different mechanics other people I decided that taking out the EFI was the best thing to do.
I find that hard to believe. Those “mechanics” probably also think points are better than electronic distributors. What ignition system are you using now?
Sorry for another late reply. It took a while to get the time to work on the truck. It ended up being the camshaft wiped a lobe. I replaced it and haven't had any problems so far.
