Diesel Aerostar!?!?!

Ok, I have a possibly stupid question. When my Aerostar is running it sounds like a diesel.... What does this mean? I don't really know anything about cars so simple terms would be great.

Does it have oil pressure or oil on the stick? Sounds as though you don't. Check it out.

Yeah, tried that, oil pressure seems to be fine when the gage is visible, and I usually don't have to have oil changed, I do have oil on the stick. Also, when i turn the headlights on the instrument display goes dark ... i dunno, fuse isn't blown so im lost

clackety clack? Maybe a bearing failed in the alternator . That might also explain the failing lights.
open the hood and listen to where the sound is coming from.
