Are you sure of the association between pinging and low fuel level? I had a remotely similar situation in which my fuel pump was dying. I don't think it was able to generate enough pressure to supply the fuel needed for the conditions. I just thought it was bad gas, until it died and left me stranded 30 miles from home one night.
You can check this if you have a fuel pressure guage. The fuel rail needs about 40 psi at idle, and more when the engine is under load, and the pump needs to be able to keep up in all those conditions.
