Today, when I turned the switch for 4 wheel, the dash 4X4 light did not come on, and the transfer case did not engage. I checked the fuses and found them to be OK. I do not know how to check the breaker. I am wanting to know some opinions on my problem. Currently I have no 4 wheel drive. Thanks, Dave
This may sound a little weird, but I used to have a ford ranger with auto locking 4x4 on the dash. Everytime I placed it in 4x4H or L, I would have to put pressure on the brake pedal before the transfer case would engage. Not necessarily stop, but at least enough pressure to make the taillights come on. Worked this way ever since the truck was driven off the lot. You could turn the **** and sit there all day with nothing happening, as soon as you press the brake, "click-click" the transfer would engage.
Hope this might help.
From: I'm lost somewhere in NJ -- can someone please find me?!?!?!?
Transfer case does not engage.
Were you in motion when you tried engaging 4x4, or at a stop? If you flip the switch, put it in Reverse, and back to Drive, does it still not work? Have you tried manually engaging the front hubs from outside? Feed us some details and we'll try to help you out.
If you are still having problems, try disconnecting your batteries for 20-30 minutes then try again. I have a 99 F350 PSD that was having the same problem. After I reset the computer all the problems were gone....good luck
The first thing I would do is verify whether or not voltage is being sent to the solenoid on the T case,(volt meter),if not work backwards if so it's in the solenoid or connection.
Thanks to all who offered input. I'm sorry I have not reported sooner. (Computer down too) I took the truck to a shop and they replaced 2 relays. I don't know what would cause them to go bad. Anyway, I'm back in the 4 wheel business. Thanks again. Dave
Just my .02 here !
Did you see the old parts or do you trust the shop that did the work because I've never seen both relays go at the same time!
also with the way the water and wet snow can cause problems with connectors to trans an transfercase. I'd be a little leary of that repair
I used to have this same problem with my '92 F150. I used to have to go in behind the glove box and thump the relays to get it to work. To aviod this hassle, I finally figured out that if I engaged the 4WD every week or so the problem did not reoccur (didn't have to drive in 4WD, just engage then disengage and drive on). Worked like this for roughly 5 years before I sold it and bought the F250.
I would strongly recommend that anyone with ESOF make this a part of your regular routine to prevent the relays from sticking (at least once every other week, get in, start it up, engage 4WD, step on brake, shift to neutral, engage 4WL, disengage 4WL, disengage 4WD, put it in gear, continue on your way).....

Having received all the good responses to my problem, I feel I may have been hoodwinked by the dealer. Anyway, thanks to everyone who gave me advice. You all have given me options should the problem reoccurre. Dave
