Yep; Victoria B.C. or Tuktoyaktuk in the Northwest Territories - big difference. ;-) Many parts of Canada are warmer and more temperate than some of the northern continental US states.
My f-350 has gone through 4 canadian winters now. I only just discovered it has a block heater. Never once had an issue starting.
and... That would have depended on where in Canada you spent your winter... I can assure you, that if you would have been in some of the places I have spent my winters, you would have trouble starting your truck even when it was plugged in, extra inline heaters and battery blankets were a must, or you would NOT be going anywhere in the morning...

Sounds like you are in the oil fields. I'm eastern Ontario. It gets cold, But usually not more then -35'c.
Where it's real cold, the tank style block heaters work better than the typical block heater because they run more watts while circulating water in the block. Trick is finding a way to plumb them.
Remember to used the low temp window washer fluid.
