I have been looking for a used truck for work and have settled on the Ford F Series. Believe me, I am learning something new every day.
I came across 92 150, clean low millage truck. Asking price at the dealer, $4450. It has a V-6. I have been told the Inline 6 is the way to go by several people.
Any opinions on the V's?
This looks to be a pretty good deal.
A V-6 in a fullsize truck is bad news. It'll probably get ya around, but won't pull anything, between a V-6, inline 6 and 302, I'd go w/ the inline 6. V-6's belong in small cars.
I'm beginning to think the dealer screwed up. I've been checking it out and the truck I'm looking at, only comes in with a inline 6. I'll find out on monday.
you say only like its a bad thing. the inline 6 was one of ford's best engines. do some research on it and youll see that it has more hauling power than the 5.0, because of the longer stroke, and gets better gas mileage. its a very stong engine and will easily last over 200k miles. i'm always keeping an eye out for a good deal on one. it would be a nice upgrade from the 2.3 four banger i have now. although, i dont mind the 24 mpg i'm currently getting. just remember, before 97 is the 4.9 I6, starting in 97 is the 4.2 V6. also check out edmunds.com for some info. -jesse
It does pull more, but it dosen't get better gas mileage. In many opinions the 300 was the best engine they ever put in a truck, you won't be dissapointed with it.
I could get 15 in my 94 I6 doing about 75-80 everywhere whereas my buddy (with the same driving tendancies) only got 12-14 w/ his 302 which could even come close to out towing or outrunning my I6
The mileage discrepancy between 302 and 300 are probably not the fault of the engine. Most late model 300's come with 2.73 or 3.08 gears; most 302's come with 3.55 or 4.10 to make up for the lack of low end torque. When the two trucks are equally equipped the 302 usually gets better mileage, but is a complete dog at low speeds.
The 300 Inline 6.....By far a classic.....All I can say is.....WOW!
Countless people get crazy life out of this engine! I plan on being one of them! I just got mine a few months ago, and the truck only has 64K as I type this!!!!
INLINES RULE and the are a pleasure to work on, too!
TORQUE TORQUE TORQUE!
I have a 3.08 rearend with an E4OD behind my 300 and I think it's too tall. Every little rise makes it shift out of OD unless you get it going ahead of time. I think 3.55's are ideal with an OD transmission and the big six gets plenty good mileage with them..
I got better mileage with my bronco using 3.55's then I did with 3.08 with a NP435 4speed. The engine turned a few 100 more RPM going down the highway but I used ALOT less throttle ( I have a vacumm gauge installed to conferm it) I used to get ~15mpg with stock tires and I swapped to 3.55's because I was going to install 33" tires but I ran around with stock tires for a few months and my mileage went up to ~16mpg with the 3.55' (and yes I did put the proper speedo gear in) It would maintain speed in 4th now going up a big hill by my place instead of loosing speed and the added gas mileage was a plus+
I'm even thinking of putting 3.55's in my 89' f150 2x4 I just bought even though it doesn't have overdrive, If It had over drive I would go with 4.10's ( I like the extra torque) overdrive makes 4.10's seem like a 2.87 gear with no overdrive
