LMC Shipping Cost Rant!

I think LMC is gouging its customers!!! Every time I select a few items to purchase on their site and click on shopping cart, I am slapped in the face with the cost of shipping! How many others are having that experience?

It's not just LMC, they all do it. I ordered a small switch from one of the vendors and they recommended the $31 shipping option. I chose the cheapest which was still $11. For literally a switch that weighed less than an ounce. When it arrived, it was in a padded envelope that in no way cost $11 to ship.

I understand a small up charge for "handling" but its all insane anymore.

I basically hate LMC but sometimes you have no choice. but in their defense shipping is ridiculous with most outfits anymore they use it as an extra source of profit. I always try to find parts elsewhere, Summit, DC , eBay and places like that with more reasonable shipping.

I'm working on a '69 Camaro now and Classic Industries is the main vendor. they have free shipping sales often and it really helps cut costs. I've never seen LMC do that.

Welcome to todays economy. Shipping has become very expensive in the past 3-4 years. For company's like LMC, its a growing cost to run the shipping department. Materials have increased, labor cost has increased, their facility overhead costs have increased, insurance and regulatory costs have skyrocketed. They can't absorb all that without passing it on to the customer. Free or reduced shipping cost from actual either has the cost built into the piece price or an individual person, or company, is willing to accept the hit in profit in order to move it out of inventory. Individuals selling on ebay generaly can ship for less because they have no overhead of running a business.

Anytime an item is offered from different sources I go through the pain of checking price and shipping cost and often (not always) the closer to you something is geographically the less cost it will be to ship especially if a heavier/larger item. If its single source item then there is no option.

When I did a concourse restoration several years ago tracking all costs, I kept a line item for shipping costs, it was mind blowing even then.

And if you're south of the 49th you actually have it easy.... as soon as they cross up that border the price skyrockets again.

I priced out a tailgate from LMC and it was gonna be 1500 USD just for SHIPPING. Not even taxes and duty (and Lord knows we get taxed up here.... ohh brother do we get taxed).

To 77&79F250's point, I've also found that the local NAPA can sometimes bring in large parts such as springs, sheet metal, bumpers etc on their stock order (if they can source it - up here at least their suppliers are contractually limited). Usually paying full pull for special order, but if they can source it, shipping costs are saved.

Thanks. I'm about to drive 15 minutes to Truck Shop/Car Shop, in Orange which is right down the highway from me. Adios, LMC!

Good luck, and let us know how you get along with them and your possible new parts source.

Yeap, I will shop around online and look for free shipping. I will only pay for it when there is absolutely no other option. I just really with JBG had free shipping.

As some have mentioned, LMC can be at times (unfortunately) the only place to get some stuff. And sometimes, it's the cost of convenience. I recently ordered a ton of stuff from there - little parts with a couple of very large parts, and total cost of shipping was $90. Could I have saved on shipping by shopping elsewhere? Maybe $30-40, but at the cost of going through multiple vendors, cross-referencing part numbers and making sure what I need (which is very handily displayed on LMC part breakdown) matches what the other vendor(s) have. That would have added 2-3 hours - and when I look at the cost of it for myself, it simply made more sense (again for me) to spend the money at LMC.

If I need to buy something very specific, maybe 2-3 items, I will spend the time to find the best deal possible with minimal fees, etc. But sometimes, convenience over savings.
