Alternator installation issues (solved)

I'm finally making progress on reviving my old 84 and I've hit a snag. The alternator brack seems wrong, I'm wondering if it's something i did or if it's from the year mis matching. Because this 84 had a 351w from factory them someone before me put a 302 in it and now I'm swapping a 97 351w block in.

This is how i have it which lines up with how the 302 had it and how the shop manual shows it should go on but the alternator will only swing about a half an inch side to side before the lower bracket stops it. Does this look right?

Is there a different brack from 302 to 351?

I can't tell you for sure about the 302 351 brackets, but it doesn't look right. Every alternator bracket I have ever had the adjustable slide is on top of the alternator where you can get to it for adjustment. The pivot point always below the bracket.

I'm wondering if you have the top bracket, backwards. That tab sticking up on the top left side, may be the tab that bolts to the head...?

And the long bolt through the top of the ALT fits in those holes you have in the right top side of photo ?

If one bracket bolts to the waterpump or the block, and the other bracket that holds the alternator bolts to the head, then it will not work. The 351w has a taller deck height. It uses the same heads as the 302(except the head bolts are larger), but the head is mounted higher, the engine is wider on a 351w because the block is taller. The 351w uses the same waterpump, timing cover, etc on front of the engine as a 302. But that taller deck height will get you on some things. It also makes the intake manifold wider, since the heads sit up higher on the taller block, and they are in a v-shape, that makes the intake wider. It also requires different exhaust manifolds. The 302 exhaust manifolds will bolt to the 351w heads, since the heads are the same. But the 351w being wider, they put a different angle on the exhaust manifold outlets to make them clear everything.
