'77 f-100. i've been on here too much the last few days, but this is my only outlet for help.
question: how can i be sure i've got my 3 wires hooked to the right posts on the alt.? i returned my core when i got the alt. i'm almost positive i put wires on same bolts, but there's like 5 on there, and i'm questioning everything. there's two post that are marked. one up high with a red plastic washer, one right below that with a black plastic washer. i had my wire straight from battery on the red one, i'm pretty sure thats right. i didnt use the one with black because that wasn't the area where my feild wire was before. i used a post closer to the battery side of truck for field wire. i had the w/b wire on the far side, kind of low. i dont know how makes alt., but it's a kragenator.
the reason for question is, i'm suppose to have some resistence when check ground to field, but 3 outta 5 post (including the one i've been using) show no resistence. i know this post is kind of confusing, but only way i know to explain
thanks sparky, i've seen alot of your post and you seem to know a good deal about this field.
but i've got all the wiring down. what i was really tryin' to ask is their a way to tell exactly which terminals on alt are STA and FLD? i didnt go about asking the right way.
Punchy, they are labeled on the alt in raised letters. I am too lazy to go look but I think the field is the closest one to the larger bat connection. The other one is the stator, you don't need that unless you have a idiot light.
There is also a ground terminal. You don't need it. The alt will be grounded by it's mounting bolts.
thanks mike, you've been dealin' with me for 2 days now. but i seriously dont think they're marked on this alt. usually, they are, i'vr changed numerous alts. thanks again for all the help.
No problem, I looked in a manual. The field is the one closest to the bat term. There is a ground term nearby. The stator will have continuity to the bat term via the diodes. The field just goes to the rotor winding and to ground via the brushes.
yeah, i went and messed with it got a small mirror out and saw that they were labled. not really as clear and raised that i'm used to on an alt. so after spending my whole weekend off and on checking fuses, running various test, in and out of the house every couple hours to check for post, i realized i had the feild on a ground the whole time. just like me. well i finally connected right and its still not charging. it's dark and i've been at it all day so i aint messin' with it tonight.
i really kinda believe that i ruined the reg. sometime over the weekend starting the truck, unhooking and hooking battery ground and reg. harness. i just really hope i didnt damage alt. but i dont think i could from just running field to ground. anyway, i'll see tommorrow. thanks again.
