You don't want to run an MX4 completely open, because it will run on the cab.
Could be different on a long bed vs short bed, on my short bed SD it doesn't rub on the cab. If the rubber pads were to touch anything, it would be the glass. I think it can be propped up and held with the rods in way that doesn't make contact, although I've only done it a few times in the past 5 years.
One of teh downsides of ordering a cover or mat from the internet is if something goes wrong, you can't just go back to where you bought it for repairs. There aren't many places near me that even carry these items, so going to the dealer does have its plusses. The nearest place for me is about 45 minutes away, closed on weekends. I will probably get the bed rug from Amazon, since the only issues I had were teh strips coming unglued, bed rug sent me a new bag of them.
I like the BAK Revolver X4 cover on mine that rolls up. I don't tow a 5th wheel but it rolls up and still provides visibility. I had a local 4x4 shop install it.

The DRW cover from Ford should be 4 panel, not three on an 8ft bed. AKA MX4 cover. With three panels open a fifth wheel is easily hitched. But indeed you can't open the last panel and drive with it against the window.
One of the biggest benefits of the MX4 is the independent operation of cover/tailgate. I'm not sure which other covers, if any, offer this, but I find it efficient and convenient.

I'm talking when you have all panels folded up against the cab using the rods to keep it up. It doesn't stand up freely in the air.

I have short and long cab versions of the MX4. When completely folded up, the covers rest lightly against the rear glass via squishy rubber cushions and are held in position by struts. I have not seen nor heard of any negative effects related to this. If there are any, what are they?

Guess you are right (for 2017+SD). My 2011 F150 rubbed.

I am talking about the same thing (seemed pretty clearvto me). I can position mine in the upright position with the rods inserted without it actually touching anything, but if it were to touch, it would be the rubber to the back glass. I see you have now discovered that too.
I ran across a trifold that had 4 panels, the cab side fixed. I wonder if that is what the Ford trifold looks like. It was on Amazon, so not much detail to go on.
I am looking for a cover for the DRW bed. Ford has their "brand" hard cover and its a trifold, the last panel doesn't flip up. What I am wondering is how far does it extend back from the cab and does it work with a 5th wheel?
I'm also juggling bedrug vs Rhino/linex and bedrug mat. Either case gets the bedrug bottom, but not convinced the spray on is actually going to be needed if I go bed rug.
I had the 8' BakFlip MX4 on my '17 F350 dually. Was able to leave the last section close to the cab down and still had plenty room to manuver the '41 Solitude we had. Had a local shop spray their liner version of bed liner which was a thicker mileage then Rhino or Line-Ex. Used a rubber bed mat and cut around the Curt Q20 hitch I had. Cover when down cleared the hitch handle by a 1/4 inch and I just left it in all the time. Have a MX4 Bakflip on the '17 F250 with the short bed and its still in decent shape even after 7 yrs.
Close but cleared. Didn't have to fold the cover against the rear of the cab when hooked up to the fifth wheel.

My vote, probably 10 times out of 10, would be for the Revolver @bbolander posted in the pics above. I've had this cover on two trucks now, it's a solid choice and if I'm in the market for covering the 2023, I would buy another one. With the way the back windows are made, when this cover is rolled up, the view is almost completely unobstructed. It's secure, keeps rain out, offers a tight seal along the entire bedside, and it's a very nice low profile. It's got my vote. I also like the spray-in liner but a bedrug on the floor of the bed would be a nice addition for the knees.
