My 2002 F-350 truck has some play in the steering wheel and doesn't actually start turning the wheels right away. It's not a hazard or anything like that. It's just soft feeling. Maybe a few degrees of swing before the wheels start to move. How do I tighten it up? Does the pump need to be replaced? Is there an adjustment? Is there an after market steering pump that works better?
There are a lot of things that can cause that. Tie rod ends, drag link, ball joints, pitman arm, steering box are all possibilities. How many miles on the truck?
Thanks Pikachu, 315,910 miles. But, I know all that. And none of that is original except the steering box. When the truck had only 25,000 or 30,000 miles on it I didn’t like the feel. I want it to feel tighter. How can I get that feel?
I would place a bet on your pitman arm nut needing tightened, I just did this to my 2002 F350, and when I was at my folks place in MO, my dad was telling me his 89 F150 was feeling "loose" so I tightened his up, all it takes is about 1/4 turn maybe more till it's tight again. I have had numerous friends trucks I have done this on and they were ecstatic with the results. A friend of mine had his whole front-end re-done only to still have that "loose" feel, he was ready to sell his truck... pulled it in, got the 1 5/16' socket, breaker bar and cheater bar, honked on it for a good 1/2 turn and told him to go for a drive. All good.
