Hood Side spear pads

Greeting Fordies,

Continuing to work on restoration of the 1961 f100 flareside. I'm wondering what people do to protect their newly painted hoods when reapplying bolt on emblems. I can find "pads" that go under the center emblem, but nothing for the side spears. Are you making your own, have a source, going without? Thanks in advance for sharing your ideas.

I personally have made several emblem pads (including the oval fender badges on my ‘66) out of old bicycle tire inner tubes. They work great! Just open up the inner tubes lengthwise and cut out the length and pattern you need. They make great pads for just about anything.

Interesting. Did they come from the factory with rubber behind the hood trim? I'm starting to put mine back on after getting the truck painted. When I removed the trim, I didn't see any indications of there ever being any.

No, none of the emblems ever came with gaskets from the factory, to my knowledge. But they started making them aftermarket for the hood emblems years ago, so I made one instead of buying one. Then I just carried that particular “technology” over to the fender emblems as well. I know it sounds funny, bicycle tire tubes, but it does work great.

Based on the parts book, looks like there were no rubber pads....

Seems like a pretty good idea to keep moisture/dirt out from behind the trim

That’s what I thought too. That’s why I made mine. And I guess that’s why they eventually started making them aftermarket for the hood ornaments.
