Has anyone seen, bought, or modded a way to lock a 1990 Ranger tailgate? I have seen the Pop & Lock systems, but they apparently only apply to 1993 and up....We have a soft tri-fold cover on it, but need some way to secure the tailgate from being opened while the cover is clamped on. I know...its a soft cover...but we are not using this as a gold vault...just need some deterrence from people walking off with the kids baseball gear or some basic tools.
All I have ever seen is a shackle mounted at either end of the tailgate, and the back end of the bed. A padlock hasp? I do not know the terminology. Not very elegant, but should be effective.
There may be latch locks that replace the original with a keyed mechanism to disable the handle unless the unlocked. Have not looked.
An aftermarket electric latch might be adequate to disable the normal handle. I think a solenoid is used to operate the innards, and the external handle can be disconnected. Run the wires to the cab, and lock the cab doors...
