I am original owner of 73 F100 4X w/360, manual. Instead of 13.5 degrees for centrifical @2K I have 30 degrees plus, and even faster advance w/vac. So the engine falters before 2000 rpm's, I'm thinking my fly weight springs are bad. Am I on the right track, and if so where can I find new fly weight springs? I looked around yesterday and there are after market springs for GM but i didn't see any for Fords, its the orginal distributor so i'll replace the whoe unit if i have to but would prefer to replace springs if possible.
i had a pinging problem for my 390 and bought crane cams adjustable vaccum advance kit. I have a ecltronic dizzy . The kit comes with 3 different springs for various mechanical vaccum and the cannister is adjustable as well. I haven't installed anyof the springs but i need to cause i have a lot of mechanical advance as well.
Great, I'll look for that kit. Mine will hardly run with the vac attached, w/o it really falters at 2K rpms but is OK just pok'n around. I had some springs I got 20 years ago and never installed, and of course couldn't find them now.
The springs in these dist. are pretty common pieces. I bet if you bought a set for a GM something, or even for a Mallory they would work in your factory unit. They are all pretty much all the same design and length. The strength of the spring is different, but if you buy a package I'm sure you can find one to use.
It sounds like you have a broken spring and it lets the weight pull the advance up too quick.
