F250 fuel issue

Hello all. I have a F250 7.3 lariat ext. long bed. So problems have been popping up roughly in the past week. Problem one is my engine has started knocking after roughly a 40 minutes drive. I lose power and now my fuel pump on the rail whines. I believe it is the fuel pump what are your thoughts. I had injectors done last year along with the fuel pump. I have read in another forum that changing the fuel pumped stopped their knock/loss of power problem, I wonder if I have the same issue. Has ran like a champ for the past year. All started to happen after I fueled up from Speedway and added hotshots everyday additive. TIA

Have you dropped the fuel tank and checked the screens in the mixer inside the tank? Those do tend to plug up. There are service kits available to replace the screens, but most people just eliminate that mess entirely. It's also a good time to replace the fuel pickup foot in the tank since those have a habit of breaking off at random times and letting you "run out" of fuel even though the gauge says you still have enough.

no I haven’t dealt with those yet. Last time I had fuel starvation problems it was the fuel pump in the rail but it wasn’t causeing a knocking sound.

A whining fuel pump usually means there's an intake restriction. You could try plumbing in a suction gauge (if you have one) between the tank and pump. Any suction reading there should be negligible. If the reading is significant, those screens are most likely the problem. A pressure gauge plumbed in to the filter housing would tell you if fuel pressure is a problem, but you still wouldn't have a good idea of where the problem is.
Another thing you might try is to pop the suction line off the pump and connect a line to a (secure) temporary tank of some sort and see if the problem goes away.

I replaced my fuel filter. Don’t hear the pump whine anymore. Going for a drive to see if problems stopped.
