Been awhile but had a question. I'm disabling the cruise for now but a few months I had the truck run away on me because the throttle got stuck and was pretty sure the cruise control cable just hung up but it did it again today. I haven't used the cruise control in awhile as I never really use it much but today in town just idling around it randomly pulled the throttle to about a quarter and took off. Luckily I was able to force it back with my foot but what could cause this? I've never heard of it and no idea if this has anything to do with it but my truck does have the recall harness for cruise control. It's my 94 F150 and there are no codes.
There are two paths for the brake circuit to shut off speed control. One is the Brake On/Off (BOO) switch the other is the Brake Pressure Switch (BPS). If both paths are not shutting down the speed control module you most likely have a bad module. I would remove power from it ASAP.
Extremely odd the module is somehow turning itself on. The only way to do that normally is pushing the speed control On button on the steering wheel.
Keep in mind, you can always just unplug the module under the hood.
It's completely independent from anything else.
this is what I did on my 95.
I was sitting at a stop light one day and mine decided it was time to go I guess. Only problem is I have a 5 speed. So with no resistance it went straight to the rev limiter. Let me tell you, at 3 am when that happens.... you wake right the hell up. Lol.
Only happened the one time and that was enough for me. I don't need the cruise anymore anyway as I only have a 6 mile drive to work now.
I appreciate all the feed back and it has been unplugged... potentially forever. It's not that I don't like cruise but I prefer just using my foot because I feel I have more control over what it's doing. I've been driving vehicles for years with no cruise so I'm so use to not having it I see no need to use it every time considering most of my rigs don't go more than 250 miles a week.
On another note...I have another question for y'all. It's been like this for awhile but intermittently I lose response to power locks and I also noticed today my horn is the same story. I'm guessing a ground of some kind but if anyone sees this and has an idea of what might cause that I would any ideas of what causes this.
Is it possible to put cruise control on a truck that wasn't factory equipped with it ? I have run across a lot of trucks in junkyard with cruise control and was just wondering if it is possible, hard to do and most importantly is it safe? Any help greatly appreciated...94 f150 XL 5.0

It is...but not sure what it takes. I'm not sure if Ford still had all the factory wiring just sitting there for it but from what I've heard it's not super hard. I wouldn't see why it wouldn't be safe but if the components are damaged in any way I wouldn't use them off of that parts truck. I would look on YT and see if they have much. If you haven't already I would start your own thread so you can get better answers.
does your truck have a clock spring? no horn and wonky cruise are indications of a failed clock spring behind the steering wheel.
Yes I believe it does but not 100% sure. I would imagine it does because of the buttons on the steering wheel but I could be wrong. How hard are they to replace? I also have an airbag steering wheel if that makes any difference.
I agree that the weird speed control issue combined with no horn could be a short in the clock spring. It is pretty easy to replace. The hardest part can be removing the steering wheel - unless you have a puller. As for the air bag… don’t let that intimidate you. Disconnect the battery and let it sit for a 30 minutes before removing the air bag. I’m sure that is longer than needed but I don’t remember how long it says in the service manual.
