4x4 Problems

I've got a '99 Ranger, 3.0L with about 65,000 miles. I put it in 4 wheel drive yesterday just to try it out. Ran it for about a 1/2 mile on a dirt road and then disengaged it. It seemed to go into and out of 4 wheel drive okay, but now the 4 wheel high and 4 wheel low lights blink on and off, and it won't go back into 4 wheel drive. I bought the truck in the summer and checked the 4 wheel drive out then and it worked okay, and haven't used it since then. What throws me off is the blinking lights. Any suggestions?

Welcome to FTE brdell.
The number of flashes should be the fault code number. Count the # of flashes.
My service manual only covers 93 - 97. Get yourself a service manual for your truck.
If the 99 is like previous years, you may have to change the GEM?

I don't remember exactly what the blinking lights are, but probably just an obvious reminded that something's not working. You may need to clean the shift motor on the transfer case, or the wiring connector on it. Also, as you'll find out, it's good to use the 4x4 more often, keeps everything lubricated. I used to have problems with my 4x4 when I didn't use it often. Now, I use 4x4 atleast once a week, somedays every day, and haven't had any problems for a while. Good luck, I'm sure you'll get more suggestions.
